Why the body

Why do we work with the body?

Perhaps you have read a great deal about why the body is the missing link in trauma resolution, but you have never learnt concrete skills for working with the body? As a practitioner on the frontlines of healing, it's crucial you're equipped with the effective trauma interventions, so you can provide lasting relief for your clients.

Why is the body the missing link?

The training at Attuned2U recognises that the body is the missing link in many approaches to dealing with trauma. Learning skills to work with the body will enable you to offer trauma survivors freedom from the painful effects of trauma and move into the zone of wellbeing and resilience, so clients can experience a new sense of safety and purpose.

What does the research say?

Classic research carried out by Dr Bessel Van Der Kolk (2015) and others shows that when a person faces trauma, the parts of the brain that deal with narrative memory and verbal processing are inhibited. However, the sensory elements of the traumatic memory are left un-integrated and un-attached, persisting as implicit memories, flashbacks and dissociative symptoms.

Who is this training for?

Attuned2U offers training that addresses the body as the starting point in working with trauma, before proceeding with cognitive and emotional processing. If you are looking for concrete and practical skills for addressing the body/mind, then the training offered at Attuned2U is for you.

The models

What CRM and TRM actually are

Two complementary models from the Trauma Resource Institute. One steadies the nervous system; the other works through the trauma itself.

Module 1Foundation

What is the Community Resiliency Model™?

CRM is a set of six wellness skills that teach people to track their own nervous system and return to the resilient zone — the state in which we think clearly, feel steady, and respond rather than react. It treats the biology of trauma as the starting point, working with sensation in the body before asking anyone to narrate what happened. Practitioners use it to steady clients in distress and to protect themselves from vicarious trauma.

The six skills
  • Tracking
  • Resourcing
  • Grounding
  • Gesturing
  • Help Now!
  • Shift and Stay

Module 2Clinical

What is the Trauma Resiliency Model™?

TRM is the clinical extension of CRM: where CRM stabilises, TRM re-negotiates the traumatic event itself. It adds four skills that let a practitioner work through trauma at a pace the nervous system can tolerate, without the client re-living it. The premise comes from research showing that during trauma the brain regions handling narrative and speech are inhibited, while sensory fragments persist as implicit memory, flashbacks and dissociation. TRM addresses those fragments directly.

The four skills
  • Titration
  • Pendulation
  • Completing defensive responses
  • Integrating implicit memory

About

Attunement is key in healing.

One of the great joys in my life has been seeing lasting growth in the lives of my clients. The phrase, "triumph over life's difficulties" became the motto of my private practice, the Olive Branch, where I have been offering professional therapeutic counselling for 25 years. I am a social worker, registered with the SACSSP as a specialist in clinical social work.

I have a special interest in trauma. I have received training in Somatic Experiencing™ (SE) as well as the Community Resiliency Model™ (CRM) and the Trauma Resiliency Model™ (TRM). I was one of 3 people who were instrumental in bringing these models to South Africa. At this time, I am the only person who is accredited to present training in the Trauma Resiliency Model in South Africa.

These safe and gentle approaches to trauma resolution ensure that it does not need to be an ordeal to heal. I strive to have a deep understanding of those with whom I work and to be attuned to what the client is experiencing. Attunement is key in healing.

At this time, I find myself in a new life phase. I have retired from seeing clients in my practice in order to focus on offering training. I welcome you at Attuned2U to join our community of attuned, somatically oriented trauma therapists.
